WANT TO BE A DOCTOR?
A successful student always aims high to go up in life. The first profession one prefers nowadays, is to become a Doctor. At the tender age of 17, a student who aims to become a Doctor may not be aware of the responsibilities, risks, ethics, attitude, difficulties of normal life, etc. of a doctor.
He/she simply aspires to become a doctor and enters college. I met a woman student who was about to take up a branch in medicine. She said she was interested in a particular discipline. I suggested taking up Gynecology and Obstetrics which is more suitable for women.
Considering the population of our country, there is wide scope for this discipline. It is also remunerative. It does not require any infrastructure or capital investment. There is the personal satisfaction of having brought a baby into this world. There is scope to learn more and help the mothers to be free from any complications during pregnancy.
She was firm in her decision. I even told her that there would be a shortage of women gynecologists if all women prefer not to take up gynecology. I also told her about the hardships and embarrassment a pregnant woman would face, to go to a male doctor for a checkup,
The tradition and culture in India are different from western countries. A woman must be considerate to another woman. Whilst, I agree that it is their right to choose their career, I request them to look into the reality of the situation when selecting the field they wish to study.
டாக்டர் ஆக விருப்பமா?
நன்றாகப் படிக்கும் ஒரு மாணவன்/மாணவி வாழ்க்கையில் மேலே போக விருப்பப்படுவது இயற்கை. முதலில் அவர்கள் விரும்புவது ஒரு டாக்டர் ஆக வேண்டும் என்பதே. அந்தச் சிறிய 17 வயதில் ஓர் மருத்துவரின் பொறுப்புகள், கஷ்டங்கள், எண்ணங்கள், தர்மங்கள், வாழ்க்கை முறைகள் எல்லாம் அவர்களுக்கு தெரிந்து இருக்க வாய்ப்பு இல்லை.
ஒரு டாக்டர் ஆக வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்துடன் ஒருவர் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரியில் சேருகிறார். அந்த மாதிரி கல்லூரியில் சேர்ந்த ஓர் மாணவி யை நான் சந்திக்க நேர்ந்தது. மருத்துவத்தில் என்ன பிரிவு எடுக்க விருப்பம் என்று நான் கேட்டதற்கு அந்தப் பெண் ஏதோ ஒரு பிரிவைக் கூறினார். நான் பெண்களுக்கு மிகவும் பொருத்தமான மகப்பேறு மருத்துவம் படிக்க அபிப்பிராயம் தெரிவித்தேன்.
நமது நாட்டின் ஜனத்தொகையை பார்க்கும்போது இதற்கு நல்ல வாய்ப்பு உண்டு. நிறைய வருவாய் ஈட்டவும் வாய்ப்புண்டு. இதற்கு முதலீடு எதுவும் தேவையில்லை. ஒரு குழந்தையை இவ்வுலகில் கொண்டுவந்த திருப்தி உண்டு. ஆராய்ச்சி செய்து கர்பிணிகளின் பிரச்சனைகளை தீர்க்க வழி உண்டு.
அவருக்கு அதில் விருப்பம் இல்லை. தன்னுடைய எண்ணத்தை மாற்றிக்கொள்ள விரும்பவில்லை. பெண்கள் மகப் பேறு மருத்துவம் எடுக்கவில்லை என்றால் அந்தத் துறையில் மருத்துவர்கள் குறைந்து விடுவார்கள் என்று கூறினேன். ஆண்கள் மகப் பேறு பார்த்தால் பெண்களின் கஷ்டத்தையும் தர்ம சங்கடத்தையும் எடுத்துக் கூறினேன்.
இந்தியக் கலாசாரமும் பண்பாடும் மேலை நாடுகளில் இருந்து மாறுபட்டது. ஒரு பெண் மற்ற பெண்களில் நலத்தைக் கருத்தில் கொள்ள வேண்டும். எந்தத் துறையை தேர்ந்து எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்பது அவர்கள் உரிமை. இருந்தாலும் மற்ற பெண்களில் கஷ்டங்களையும் நலத்தையும் கருதுமாறு கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறேன்.
