This Day In History May 8 1886 American pharmacist John S. Pemberton developed Coca-Cola, a drink he originally billed as a cure-all tonic.

On May 8, 1886, Dr. John Stith Pemberton invented Coca-Cola, forever changing the history of eating habits around the world. 

The drink’s name refers to two of its original ingredients: coca leaves and kola nuts (a source of caffeine). 

Since he was a pharmacist from Atlanta he had access to a variety of chemicals and natural ingredients. 

One day, he prepared a dark coloured liquid and decided to take it to his shop, Jacobs' Pharmacy, to mix it with carbonated water. 

At this point, a test was needed. So he had the customers of the pharmacy taste it, who greatly appreciated the delicious and refreshing drink. 

From that day Pemberton put the forerunner of the current Coca-Cola on sale at five cents a glass as a takeaway drink.

The logo as we know it today was invented and designed by Frank M. Robinson, Dr. Pemberton's accountant, who thought that the two Cs would have made a nice advertising logo. 

The Coca-Cola brand - written in its famous italics font - was born with a first advertising campaign dedicated to the drink appeared in the newspaper The Atlanta Journal, inviting citizens to try this "popular new take-out drink". 

The advertising campaign for the product launch appeared on the first awnings of the shops, on which the words "Drink Coca-Cola" stood out. But the beginnings were not exciting: in the first year they sold just about nine glasses a day.

In 1887 John Pemberton registered the copyright of Coca-Cola Syrup and Extract with the US Patent Office. 

A year later, disheartened by the lack of success of his invention and never fully convinced - and aware - of the drink's potential, he gradually sold the company's shares to various partners. 

Shortly before his death, he sold the rest of Coca-Cola to Asa G. Candler who bought back the shares of other holders until he acquired complete control of the company.

Someone was visiting a temple under construction. He saw a sculptor, who was making the idol of a goddess, which was later to be installed in the temple. 

Looking around, he suddenly saw a similar statue nearby. Surprised, he asked the sculptor, "Do you require two statues of the same goddess?" 

"No." The sculptor replied while continuing his work. “We need only one statue, but the first statue got damaged in the final stages of making the statue.”

Then the gentleman went to the first statue and looked at it closely but he could not find any flaw in that statue. "What is the flaw in this statue?" he asked. 

"There is a scratch near the nose of that statue." The sculptor, being busy with his work, replied in a very simple manner.

"Can I ask where this statue is going to be installed?" The gentleman asked the sculptor. The sculptor replied, "This statue will be installed on a pillar about twenty feet high." 

"What?? If the idol is going to be kept so high how will anyone notice that there is a scratch near the idol's nose?" The gentleman asked with surprise.

The sculptor stopped his work, looked at the gentleman for the first time and said smilingly, "Who else, you don't know?."

The desire to achieve excellence in something is separate from the fact whether someone notices it or not, whether someone appreciates it or not.

Even when we feel that no one is watching us, there is a constant witness to all our actions, our thoughts and our intentions and that is, our soul! We can hide something from someone else but not from ourselves.

ரமண மகரிஷி.

ரமணபகவானை பற்றி நான் படித்த மற்றுமொரு ருசிகரமான தகவல் இதோ:

திருவண்ணாமலையில் உள்ள விருபாக்ஷ குகையில் 1899 முதல் 1916 வரை ரமணமகரிஷி தங்கியிருந்தபோது அவரது வாழ்க்கையில் ஏற்பட்ட சுவாரசியமான சம்பவம் இது.

ஒரு நாள் குகையில் அமர்ந்திருந்தபோது, சிருங்கேரி சங்கராச்சாரியாரின் சீடரான ஒரு துறவி ரமணரை பார்க்க வந்திருந்தார். ரமணமகரிஷி முறையாக சன்னியாசம் பெறவேண்டுமென்று அவரை சம்மதிக்க வைக்க முயன்றார்.

இளம்சுவாமியான ரமணர், வெள்ளை கௌபீனம் அணிவதை விடுத்து காவி உடை அணிய வேண்டுமென்று சாஸ்திரங்களை உதாரணம் காட்டி வாதாடவும் செய்தார்.

ரமணர், பிராமணர் என்பதால் சாஸ்திரங்களில் என்ன சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கிறதோ அதன்படியான நியமங்களைப் பின்பற்ற வேண்டுமென்றார் அந்தத் துறவி.

ரமணர் சம்மதித்தால், சன்னியாசத்தை ஏற்பதற்கான நடைமுறைகள் அனைத்தையும் தானே செய்து தருவதாகவும் வாக்களித்தார். அவர் சொன்ன அனைத்தையும் கேட்டு விட்டு, தனக்கு அதில் சம்மதம் இல்லையென்று ரமணர் மறுத்தார்.

சிருங்கேரியிலிருந்து வந்த துறவியோ மனம் தளரவில்லை. இளம் ரமணருக்கு அவர் கடைசியாக ஒரு நிபந்தனை விதித்தார். தான் ஊருக்குள் சென்று ஒரு மணி நேரத்தில் திரும்பி வருவேன் என்றும் அதற்குள் ரமணர் சன்னியாசத்துக்கு சம்மதம் தெரிவிக்கவேண்டுமென்றும் கூறிச் சென்றார்.

சிருங்கேரியைச் சேர்ந்த சாது ஊருக்குள் சென்றதும், ரமணர் மீண்டும் தனியாக இருந்தார். அப்போது அந்த இடத்துக்கு வந்த பட்டிக்காட்டான் ஒருவர், புத்தகங்கள் அடங்கிய மூட்டை ஒன்றை ரமணர் முன் வைத்துவிட்டு, ஒரு இடத்துக்குப் போய்விட்டு வருவதாகவும், புத்தக மூட்டையைப் பார்த்துக் கொள்ளுமாறும் சொல்லிவிட்டுப் போனார்.

பட்டிக்காட்டான், சிருங்கேரி சாது இருவருமே சொன்ன நேரத்துக்கு திரும்பவில்லை. இளம் ரமணர் மூட்டையிலிருந்த புத்தகங்களை ஒவ்வொன்றாகப் பார்த்தார். அதில் கிடைத்த ஒரு புத்தகம் அருணாஜல மகாத்மியம். அந்தப்புத்தகத்தை எடுத்து பக்கங்களை புரட்டி ஒரு சுலோகத்தைப் படித்தார் சுவாமி.

தான் படித்த சுலோகத்தை ஒரு துண்டு காகிதத்தில் எழுதி வைத்துக் கொண்டார். பின்னர், கண்களை மூடி நிஷ்டையில் ஆழ்ந்தார்.

ரமணர் கண்களைத் திறந்து பார்த்தபோது புத்தக மூட்டையை காணவில்லை. அந்த கிராமத்தான் எங்கே போனார் என்றும் தெரியவில்லை.

தன் வேலையை முடித்துக்கொண்டு சிருங்கேரி சாது, ரமணரிடம் திரும்பினார். தான் எழுதி வைத்த சுலோகத்தை ரமணர் அவரிடம் காண்பித்தார்.

“புனிதமான அருணாசல குன்றிலிருந்து மூன்று யோஜனை தூரத்துக்குள் (முப்பதுமைல்) வாழும் யாருக்கும் தீட்சை தேவையில்லை. இருப்பினும், அவர்கள் மோட்சத்தை அடைவார்கள்.” என்பதுதான் அந்த சுலோகத்தின் பொருள்.

சாது, சிருங்கேரிக்கு திரும்பி மடத்திலிருந்த சங்கராச்சாரியாரிடம் இந்த சம்பவத்தை சொன்னார். சங்கராச்சாரியார் அதைக் கேட்டுவிட்டு, ரமணமகரிஷி ஒரு ‘அத்யாச்ரமி' என்றார். அவர் எல்லா ஆஸ்ரமங்களையும் கடந்தவர் என்றும் அவருக்கு எந்த விதிகளும் பொருந்தாது என்றும் கூறினார்.

பகவான் ரமணமகரிஷி சன்யாசிக்களுக்குண்டான காவி வஸ்திரம் அணியாவிட்டாலும் அவரைப்போல உத்தம சன்யாசி கிடையாது. அது போல ஒரு பாரம்பரியம் மிக்க பெரியமடத்தின் அதிபதியாக (ஒரு ராஜாவிற்குரிய அந்தஸ்தும்,கௌரவமும்) இருந்தபோதிலும் பரமாச்சார்யார் எல்லாவற்றையும் விட்ட உண்மையான துறவியாய் விளங்கினார்.

சமகாலங்களில் வாழ்ந்த இவ்விரு மகோன்னத புருஷர்களை பெற்றது தமிழ்நாடு செய்த பெரும்பாக்யம் அல்லவா.

ரமணரிடம் புத்தக மூட்டையை கொடுத்த பட்டிக்காட்டான் யார்? ரமண மகரிஷியை திருவண்ணாமலைக்கு ஈர்த்த அந்த பரமேச்வரன் தான் என்பது என் அனுமானம்.

A FATHER WRITES TO HIS SON.

Pandit Late Sri. Jawaharlal Nehru's letters to his daughter, when he was in prison, were famous. They were published under the caption "Letters from father to daughter". 

I am not so famous like him. But I am also a father. I also write letters to my children. This letter was written by me from Chennai on 26th June 2006 to my son at Hyderabad when he was 26. It is self-explanatory.

My dear son,

After long deliberations, I am writing this letter to you. Everyone has to live his life. No one can escape. No outside guidance will help. He is drawn towards his fate. However, as a father, I have some duty towards you. I will not tell you what to do and what not. I can only guide you. You have to make the decision, lead your life and face the consequences. You have passed your boyhood and you have become an adult, educated, employed making your own money. 

You are now getting ready to be married which is the second stage in everyone's life. The third stage comes when you retire. So, for the second stage which is tougher than the first stage, one has to be mentally, physically and emotionally ready to lead a peaceful and harmonious life. Happiness is not anywhere but it is within you. It depends on how you look at it, how you take it and what your attitude is. 

Coming back to the subject, you have to get ready for married life. Though I am confident you know a good part of it, I feel I must tell you something important. The girl, you are going to choose [not us] may be rich/poor, beautiful/normal, educated/not educated, city/rural, employed/unemployed, and emotional/intellectual. A rich, beautiful, educated and employed girl may not prefer us. You will have to choose the right girl suitable for you.

A person who does not know his weaknesses is not strong enough to face life. We desire so many things but we get only what we deserve. So if a person has the right attitude, to accept what comes in as his destiny, then he lives peacefully. I do not recommend anyone for you. You have to decide. An employed girl can help in building up assets. There are many plus and minus with employed as well as unemployed girls. Now girls are well educated and well employed. They prefer boys according to their education and employment. They are only willing to marry boys who will suit their requirement and they are not willing to adjust to suit other's needs. 

Your life is going to be much more difficult than mine for various reasons. Hence I am worried about you. Traditional girls who do not go for jobs, who are interested in household work, to look after parents, husband and children are rare. You need the help of the parent or in-laws to send the girl for a job. No girl would prefer to leave a job after 2 or 3 years after tasting the pleasures of it. 

The parents are already tired of their living and they do not have the strength to take care of the children's family. That was the reason why they married unemployed girls in their life. We are planning to let you [both] have an independent life so that you have the freedom and good understanding. We know when to come and join you. Therefore, calmly weigh all the pros and consequences and take a wise decision.

MEDITATION.

Meditate for Forty-eight minutes – Osho.

Can a person meditating an hour a day gain enlightenment in this life? 

It has been found by all the great meditators of the world that just forty-eight minutes, exactly forty-eight minutes, are enough to make you enlightened. But to meditate for forty-eight minutes – I’m not even making it sixty, I’m giving you the exact time – is not an easy thing.

Even to meditate for a single minute, a whole single minute, sixty seconds, is a difficult thing – but not impossible. You can try it to check. Just put a small watch in front of you with a second hand, and start looking at the second hand the moment it moves from twelve. Just keep watching the second hand and see how long you can manage watching it.

At the most, somewhere between ten to twelve seconds you will have missed, you will have gone somewhere else. And by the time you come back, a few seconds are lost, the hand has moved. If you do it daily, then in a few days it is possible to remain for sixty minutes silently watching.

The same is the process of vipassana. You have to watch your breathing – that is the method that Buddha used, a very simple and very scientific method. You just watch the breath going in, you go with it; it is coming out, you come out with it. You don’t forget at any time the watching; you don’t go astray.

If you can manage it for forty-eight minutes, that very day you will become enlightened, in this life!

There is no need to wait for another life and there is no need even to wait for one hour. Those twelve extra minutes may be too difficult. Just forty-eight is the exact right time.

To attain those forty-eight minutes may take years, but it need not be postponed for another life, it can happen in this life.

It all depends on your intensity.

It all depends how much you are ready, willing, open, receptive, vulnerable.

துயரங்களும், மன அழுத்தமும்.

ஒருமுறை ஒரு அப்பாவி மனிதருக்கு, அவர் செய்யாத குற்றத்துக்காக , நீதிமன்றத்தால் சரியாக விசாரனை நடத்தப்படாமல் மரணதண்டனை விதிக்கப்பட்டது. அடுத்த நாள் காலை அவரை தூக்கில் போட வேண்டும் என்று அந்த நாட்டின் அரசர் உத்தரவிட்டு விட்டார்.

இப்படி ஒரு தீர்ப்பு சொன்னவுடன், அவர் அரசனை நோக்கி, "அரசே!, நான் மாய மந்திரங்கள் பற்றி ஆராய்ச்சி செய்து வருகிறேன், எனக்கு ஒரு வருடம் அவகாசம் கொடுத்தால், உங்கள் குதிரையை பறக்க வைப்பேன், என்னை தூக்கிலிட்டால் நான் ஆராய்ந்து வரும் மந்திரக் கலை அழிந்து நம் நாட்டுக்கு பயன்படாமல் போய்விடும்" என்று சொன்னார். 

இதைக் கேட்டுவிட்டு சிந்தனையில் ஆழ்ந்த அரசர், கடைசியில், "சரி, ஆனால் அப்படி குதிரை பறக்காவிட்டால், உன் தலையை யானையின் காலுக்குக் கீழே வைத்து நசுக்கி விடுவேன்" என்று எச்சரித்து, அவருக்கு ஒரு வருடம் காலக்கெடு கொடுத்தனுப்பினார்.

 அரசரின் குதிரையை அழைத்துக் கொண்டு வீட்டுக்கு வந்த அம்மனிதரைப் பார்த்த அவர் மனைவி, "என்ன இப்படி செய்து விட்டீர்கள்? உங்களுக்கு என்ன மாயம், மந்திரம் தெரியும்? குதிரைக்கு எப்படி பறக்க கற்றுக் கொடுப்பீர்கள்? எங்காவது குதிரை பறந்து கேள்விப் பட்டதுண்டா?" என்று சோகமாகக் கேட்டார். 

அதற்கு அந்த மனிதர், ‘எனக்கு ஒரு வருடம் அவகாசம் இருக்கிறது. இந்த ஒரு வருடத்தில் ஒருவேளை நான் குற்றம் செய்யாதவன் என நிருபிக்கப் படலாம், அல்லது அரசர் இறந்து விடலாம், ஏன் நானே கூட இயற்கை மரணம் அடைந்து விடலாம், அல்லது இந்தக் குதிரை இறந்து விடலாம், இல்லை யென்றால், இந்தக் குதிரை பறக்கக் கூட கற்றுக் கொள்ளலாம், யாருக்குத் தெரியும்?’ என்றார்.

நாளை என்ன நடக்கப் போகிறது என்பதை தற்போதைய சூழ்நிலைகளை வைத்து தீர்மானிக்கத் தேவையில்லை. நாளை நடக்கப் போவதற்கு இப்போதிருக்கும் சூழ்நிலைகள் ஒரு வழிகாட்டியாக வேண்டுமானால் இருக்கலாமே தவிர, அவையே ஒரு தீர்மானமாக, இறுதி முடிவாக இருக்கத் தேவையில்லை

இன்றைய சூழல்களை நாளைய எதிர்காலமாக மக்கள் கற்பனை செய்து கொள்வதால்தான் அவர்களுக்கு துயரங்களும், மன அழுத்தமும் ஏற்படுகின்றன. நாளை நடப்பது நாளைக்கே நடக்கட்டும்!

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!!!

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM AND GREAT BRITAIN.

Some people  and indeed all over the world, including those well travelled, often confuse England, United Kingdom and Great Britain. 

England is a country just like Ghana and its capital is London just like Accra is the capital of Ghana. 

Great Britain is a collection of 3 countries which came together as one country and has its capital as London. Those 3 countries are: 

1. England,

2. Scotland 

3. Wales.

When you include Northern Ireland to these 3 countries, they become United Kingdom (Union of four nations) 

1. England, 

2. Scotland, 

3. Wales, and 

4. Northern Ireland. 

That is why it is referred to as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Collectively, the four are taken as one country. And when this is the case, London is its capital. 

Please note that however these four individual nations all have their own respective capitals. 

Accordingly, the capital of 

Scotland is Edinburgh,

Wales is Cardiff;

Northern Ireland is Belfast.

England is London.
