Many married women pray to God to bless them to leave the world prior to their husband [as Sumangali with the sacred thread]. Is it fair on their part to make such a request? It is a debatable question and I wish to say my views on this issue.
Man is respected until he earns and the woman until she works. In our society, the social stigma attached to a woman after losing her husband makes it difficult for her to lead a decent life when compared to the life of a man after losing his wife.
Secondly, both of them lose their independence once they are at the mercy of somebody. If the woman is healthy she can manage for some time but the man cannot unless he is accustomed to the domestic chores.
Thirdly different couples express their love in different ways. Some by smiling, some by kissing, some by embracing and some by chiding. It depends on their understanding. Old people normally express their love by controlling the other.
How it will look if the wife says she expects her husband to leave first? It will look awkward. Only to show her love for the husband, she wants to leave first. She wants her husband to live long and enjoy life with children and grandchildren.
The taste of the pudding is in the flour. The quality of life is in living. If one leads a perfect life, loving and caring, all people will definitely reciprocate. There is nothing to worry whether the person is single or couple.
