INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE CRICKET

The beauty of cricket lies in its uniform cream coloured dress, the stylish batting display, the knacky bowling techniques, and the clever field placements. I have played at the college level and I have a fair knowledge of the game. I was a fan of England then the West Indies and then India.

Colin Cowdrey, Fred Truman, Ian Botham, Gary Sobers, Viv Richards, Michael Holding, Brian Lara, Richie Benaud, Dennis Lillee, Glen Mcgrath, Stephen Fleming, Richard Hadlee, Imran Khan, Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar Virendra Sehwag, and Rahul Dravid are some of the greats I liked.

I loved the five-day test cricket where each team is given two chances to show their strength both in batting and bowling.  The great Don Bradman had written in his book CRICKET how the game should be played. Then came the limited over game into prominence.

The thrill you get, when you have 5 slips, a gully, a point, a short leg, a fine leg or a third man is missing in limited over games. I liked the one day game only to some extent as it saved the time and the result was obtained in one day.

Then 20 x 20 came into being which I do not like at all as it spoiled the display of elegant batting, tactful bowling, and clever field placing. To add insult to injury, the Indian Premier League became a money-spinner removing even the competitive spirit between two countries.

Actually, no other game world over, say tennis, football, hockey etc, has changed its pattern to make money. IPL is spoiling young cricketers in India in not playing the game in copybook style. Only a few foreign players take part in IPL. Other foreign players are busy in their county matches to play test cricket.

Exorbitant money is paid to lure the cricketers world over to play for IPL. How can you expect a Darren Bravo bowl a sincere over to Chris Gayle? How a rookie Indian bowler bowl genuinely to captain Kohli? It is not suitable for a developing country like India.

The cricket crazy people of India have no other alternative but to spend their hard-earned money to witness a match of short duration without any competitive spirit, sacrificing the beauty of the game. O'God, please save this great game, our country, and its people.
