1820. Why is it that “give her her book” is correct but “give him him book” is wrong? English is funny.

(In "give her her book" "her" is a personal pronoun and also a possessive pronoun. 'Him' is only a pronoun. The equivalent possessive is 'his'. So the correct form of the second phrase is “give him his book”.)
