EDUCATION AND TASTE
This story was told by my grandmother when I was a boy.
Nowadays, children are admitted to school at the age of three. A few years back, they were admitted when they are five. In olden days, the boy was left with a Guru at the age of five.
Similarly, a boy was entrusted to a saint at the age of five in Gurukula for his studies. The Guru had told his wife to serve the boy castor oil in his food.
The boy without saying anything was eating his food. Years passed by and he became 14 years old. One day when food was served, he said "castor oil smell is coming out of the food"
The Guru immediately told him "your education is over, you will not learn anything hereafter and you may go home" He sent him to his parents. What was the reason? Education will not come if other tastes develop.
நான் சிறுவனாக இருந்த பொழுது என் பாட்டி இந்தக் கதையைக் கூறினார்கள்.
இப்பொழுது மூன்று வயதில் குழந்தைகளைப் பள்ளியில் சேர்க்கிறார்கள். சிறிது காலத்திற்கு முன் ஐந்து வயதில் சேர்த்தார்கள். பண்டைய காலத்தில் ஐந்து வயதில் குருகுலத்தில் விட்டு விடுவார்கள். குருவுடன் தங்கிப் படிக்கவேண்டும்.
அதே போல் ஒரு மாணவனை, ஒரு முனிவரிடம் ஐந்து வயதில் சேர்த்தார்கள். குரு தன்னுடய மனைவியிடம், அந்தச் சிறுவனுக்கு சாப்பாட்டில் தினமும் ஆமணக்கு எண்ணை போடு மாறு கூறி இருந்தார்.
சிறுவனும் ஒன்றும் கூறாமல் சாப்பிட்டுக் கொண்டு வந்தான். வருடங்கள் பல கழிந்தன. அவனுக்குப் பதினான்கு வயதாயிற்று. ஒரு நாள் சாப்பிடும் பொழுது அவன் "சாப்பாட்டில் ஆமணக்கு எண்ணை வாசனை வருகிறதே" என்று கூறினான்.
உடனே குரு அவனிடம் "உன் கல்வி காலம் முடிந்து விட்டது. இனி உனக்குப் படிப்பு வராது. நீ ஊருக்குப் போகலாம்" என்று கூறி அவனைப் பெற்றோர்களிடம் அனுப்பி வைத்தார். என்ன காரணம்? ருசி தெரிய ஆரம்பித்தால் படிப்பு வராது. நாக்கு வேலை செய்தால் மூளை வேலை செய்யாது.
