Two friends make a bet that if he spends 1 month alone in a room without meeting or talking to anyone, then the other friend will give him one lakh rupees in cash. Meanwhile, if he does not fulfill the bet, he will lose.
The first friend accepts this bet. He is kept locked in an empty house far away. He is given only two meals a day and some books.
When he started living there alone, he was able to manage reading books for 1-2 days, then he started getting irritated.
He was told that if he becomes unbearable even a little, he can ring the bell to signal and he will be taken out of there.
As the days passed, each hour started feeling like ages to him. He would scream and shout but keeping in mind the bet, he would not call anyone outside.
He would tear his hair, cry, curse, and writhe in agony. The pain of loneliness started to seem terrible to him but he would stop himself by remembering the bet.
Some more days passed and a strange peace started to develop inside him. Now he did not feel the need for anyone. He would just sit silently. He stopped screaming and shouting in absolute silence.
Meanwhile, his friend started worrying that the days of a month were passing by but his friend was not coming out.
Only the last 2 days of the month were left. When he reaches there, his surprise knows no bounds. That friend leaves the place exactly one day before leaving a letter.
Dear friend, in this one month I have found infinite peace by living alone and I have also come to know that the less our needs become, the more we get infinite joy and peace.
These days I have come to know the infinite love of God. That is why I am breaking the bet and now I do not need the money.
