The Bombay blood group is a rare blood group, phenotypes of this group lack H antigen on the red cell membrane and have anti-H in the serum. It fails to express any A, B or H antigen on their red cells or other tissues. The existence of a human H/h genetic polymorphism was first established by Bhende et al.
H antigen deficiency is known as the "Bombay phenotype" (h/h, also known as Oh) and is found in 1 of 10,000 individuals in India and 1 in a million people in Europe.
This is called Bombay Blood because it was first found in some people of Bombay. The Hh blood group contains one antigen, the H antigen, which is found on virtually all RBCs and is the building block for the production of the antigens within the ABO blood group.
According to experts, one in four million across the world and one in 10,000 in India are born with the blood type. An individual belonging to the Bombay blood group could donate blood to a person with an ABO blood type but can receive blood only from a donor belonging to the Bombay blood group.
In the U.S., the blood type AB, Rh-negative is considered the rarest, while O positive is most common. AB negative is the rarest blood group in India.
What's the rarest blood type?
AB-negative (0.6 per cent)
B-negative (1.5 per cent)
AB-positive (3.4 per cent)
A-negative (6.3 per cent)
O-negative (6.6 per cent)
B-positive (8.5 per cent)
A-positive (35.7 per cent)
O-positive (37.4 per cent)
Anybody can possess the Rh O-Negative, alias the 'Royal Blood', as it is not restricted to royalties. ... It is the Rh O-Negative. someone possessing this blood group can donate his/her blood to anyone, irrespective of their blood group.
The golden blood type or Rh null blood group contains no Rh antigens (proteins) on the red blood cell (RBC). This is the rarest blood group in the world, with less than 50 individuals having this blood group. ... This makes it the world's most precious blood type, hence the name golden blood.
Of the eight main blood types, people with type O have the lowest risk for heart disease. People with types AB and B are at the greatest risk, which could be a result of higher rates of inflammation for these blood types. A heart-healthy lifestyle is particularly important for people with types AB and B blood.
