Dear friends,
In 1980, I was working in a leading company at their head office in Armenian street, Chennai. Our factory was situated in Perambur. Early that year, there was heavy rain in Chennai. Consequently, our factory was flooded, damaging all machinery, raw materials, and finished goods. The work came to a standstill. The company declared 15 to 20 days of compulsory leave for all the staff.
I was 35, with two children. I was worried about my future as the company was already in the red. Then I decided to search for other jobs and started sending applications to various companies. As I had 13 years of experience in export sales, I was confident of getting a good offer. Meanwhile, I decided to go to Bombay, now Mumbai, and try my luck there through my brother-in-law. I booked the ticket to Bombay for a week's stay.
As the journey to Bombay took about 20 to 24 hours, I wanted to have some book to read on the way. I inquired with my brother whether he could spare me a book from his collection. He gave me a book titled "VEDANTA TREATISE". It was written by Swami Parthasarathy. It contained about 350 pages. It was so interesting that I read the book before I completed my travel.
I was so captivated by the book and there was no stopping midway. The book explains the technique of practical living applicable to all walks of life. Its scientific exposition of truth helps one achieve mental peace and bliss as well as success and progress in the world. It leads to the ultimate goal of self-realization.
Swami Parthasarathy is 88 years old now and still leading a healthy life. He runs the Vedanta Life Institute in Bombay. Every year he comes to Chennai to deliver lectures on various chapters of Baghavad Gita at the Music Academy. All his lectures are well attended. He has also trained his daughter Ms. Sunanda in the same field and she also delivers similar lectures like her father. Her lectures are also well attended.
While I was in Bombay, I wanted to buy another copy of the book for my reference, as I had to return the book to my brother after my return. I got the phone number from the directory and talked to the Institute. I told them about my wish to have another copy for me. I was told the price of the book was Rs.120/. [ Now I understand it is about Rs.1200/ from Amazan]. I told them, I was new to Bombay and I did not know their place. He asked for my departure details and said he would send the book through a messenger to the station.
In return. he wanted a small parcel to be delivered to Ms. Sunanda at Madras. On the day of the departure, a person in the Institute outfit met me at Dadar station and handed over the book and the parcel. Initially, he refused to accept money for the book, and on my insistence he took it. I was very happy to own the book. Even now, I read certain chapters of the book for peace of mind. PLEASE DO NOT MISS TO READ THIS BOOK

I found this book to be a clear and logical explanation of the the most basic questions of human existence. Written in simple and easily understandable language, this book appeals to all types of readers. For the casual browser, it is an introduction to the fundamentals of philosophy (Who am I? what is the purpose of life? How should I live my life? etc). For a serious student of philosophy, it explains the subtle nuances of thinking that are the essence of Indian philosophy (the theory of causation, the four yogas, states of consciousness etc). For a seeker, it provides a window through which we can glimpse the road to self realization. Swami Parthasarathy has distilled the knowledge of an ancient civilization to make it accessible to the average person and relevant to the world we live in. Vedanta Treatise is a handbook for day-to-day life which explains the mystical precepts that govern human existence and provides practical knowledge to achieve success in the present.

ReplyDeleteOne of the best books I have read on the subject of the human intellect and our attachment to the material world.
