MAN OR WOMAN?

Q: Who lives longer men or women?

A: Women live longer than men on average. In the United States, women outlive men by about 5 to 6 years, with an average life expectancy of roughly 81 years for women compared to 75 to 76 years for men. Worldwide, this gap holds true across almost all countries and even many other mammal species.

Biological Reasons:

Genetics:

Females have two X chromosomes (XX) while males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY). A second X chromosome acts as a backup if a genetic mutation or defect occurs on the first one.

Hormones:

Estrogen helps protect the heart and blood vessels and remains active until menopause.

Immune Response:

Women generally possess stronger immune systems, allowing them to fight off infections and illnesses more effectively.

Behavioral and Social Reasons:

Health Habits:

Men smoke and use alcohol at higher rates than women, which leads to chronic conditions over time.

Risk Taking:

Men engage in more dangerous activities and work in riskier jobs.

Medical Care:

Women visit doctors for routine checkups and preventative care more often than men do.

Fatal Injuries:

Rates of death from accidents, homicide, and suicide are significantly higher among men.
